The Voynich Index — what is and isn't public about Soviet state pharmacology
There is a large body of Soviet pharmacological work that exists in fragmented form across the Russian-language primary literature, with no consolidated public dossier and no civilian regulatory trail. The state that produced most of it does not want you to see the whole. This page is the structural map of what is reconstructable and what is not.
The 'Voynich' analogy is deliberate: like the Voynich manuscript, Soviet military pharmacology is a large body of work that exists in fragmented form across Russian-language primary literature, with no consolidated public dossier and no civilian regulatory trail. The state that produced it does not want you to see the whole.
High Voynich — closed protocol, pre-clinical only
- B-190 / indralin — pre-clinical dossier in Vasin publication thread is open, but human clinical files are not
- Carboxime — published as monotherapy; the military auto-injector multi-drug combination is not
- Ethomersol — pre-clinical only; referenced in Morozov-lineage papers but no clinical file
- Thiazoloindoles (12 compounds) — VMA programme, 5 of 12 active in exhaustive-load tests; 4 active in acute hypercapnic hypoxia; pre-clinical only
- 3-Hydroxypyridines (IBKhF-1 / -11 / -14) — out-perform bemitil and bromantane in treadmill/swim tests; pre-clinical only; the Iasnetsov 2011 paper is the single open publication
- 1-Oxa-4-aza-2-silacyclanes — RSMU silicon chemistry; mixed signals; pre-clinical only; 8 compounds studied
- Indometophen — non-steroidal estrogenic radioprotector; single Russian-language paper; development history largely absent
- Perftoran — military / submarine dosing protocols are open (Maevsky's published papers), but the closed-programme validation data from the 1980s are not
Low Voynich — open literature, civilian registration
- Bemitil — extensively civilian-registered
- Bromantane — civilian-registered as Ladasten; PK/PD data in published papers
- Unithiol — original Petrun'kin 1950s paper is open; DMPS is the Western clinical development, well published
- Pantocrine / Eleutherococcus / Ginseng — extensively published; Brekhman-Dymov 1969 is the canonical English-language paper (PMID 5788767)
- Cystamine — first-aid-kit radioprotector; standard pharmacology open
Why this matters
PubChem and Wikipedia organise compounds by molecular structure. This index organises them by how much of the development history is publicly reconstructable — a fundamentally different axis, and one that maps directly onto what the state-sponsorship structure made possible.
The bar for "we know how this was actually used in military, cosmonaut or nuclear-industry populations" is much higher than the bar for "we know what the molecule does in a dish." Soviet-pharma evidence without that distinction is incomplete, and most published Western secondary sources on these compounds elide it entirely.
Every compound dossier in this archive carries a Voynich flag, so that a reader can tell at a glance which side of the line they are reading.
