Bioregulators
Walk into any pharmacy in St. Petersburg and you can buy, over the counter, a calf-thymus extract invented for Soviet soldiers in the 1970s. Down the street, a synthetic four-amino-acid peptide — advertised as a geroprotector — sits on the same shelf. Both come from the same institute, the work of one man who ran it for forty years: Vladimir Khavinson, who died in January 2024. What follows is the catalogue of what he left behind. There are twenty-six compounds in the corpus: the older complex extracts (Thymalin from calf thymus, Epithalamin from bovine pineal, Cortexin from pig-brain cortex, Prostatilen from bovine prostate, Retinalamin from mammalian retina) and the newer short synthetic peptides his group characterised in the 1990s and 2000s (Epitalon, the four-amino version of Thymalin's active fragment; Thymogen, the dipeptide; Pinealon, Pancragen, Cortagen, Livagen, Cardiogen, the rest). The mechanism the school claims — that short peptides bind DNA in the major groove and re-program tissue-specific gene expression — has three pieces of independent-looking evidence (transporter-mediated uptake shown by in-silico docking in 2023, nuclear penetration observed by microscopy in 2011, and a direct NMR-plus-molecular-dynamics binding study of the EDR tripeptide in 2019). The bigger claims — twenty to forty percent rodent lifespan extension, telomere elongation in human cell lines — come almost entirely from Khavinson's own group, in journals most Western readers have never heard of. There is one near-independent replication: Brunel University London ran an Epitalon dose-response on human cell lines in 2025, with positive results and a figure-files-only correction. That is the highest the evidence gets without leaving the building.

Cyrillic 'хавинсон' yields 182 (not 7 as the May reference claimed) — Cyrillic coverage is much better than the working reference assumed.
6 · Structural problems with the evidence
- Single-PI dominance: ~459 PubMed papers list Khavinson (2026-08-26 live count)
- Venue concentration: Bulletin of Experimental Biology and Medicine (RU, low IF), Neuroendocrinology Letters (SK, low IF), Advances in Gerontology (RU, very low IF); high-IF placements are rare
- Commercial COI concentrated at one institute around one PI
- No high-profile Western group has run the headline experiments under a rigorous protocol (e.g. NIA ITP) with a public result — the field remains a closed loop to outsiders
- Mainstream review coverage is emerging but is the field entering on its own terms: 2026 Frontiers in Aging (PMID 42021992) and 2020 Stem Cell Rev Rep (PMID 31808038, Khavinson-authored) are not skeptical reviews

- Samson-Med (manufacturer of Thymalin) **stopped manufacturing thymalin October 2025**. Russian registration ЛС-000267 remains active (expires 18.12.2027, re-issued 19.04.2023, holder Цитомед); new St. Petersburg manufacturing facility reported 76% complete by summer 2026. Per Twitter/X intel (Aug 2026): gray-market 'THYMALIN 10mg 99% purity' research-chem product is NOT pharmacologically equivalent to original Samson-Med thymalin — polypeptide fraction ≠ defined peptide. Compound remains obtainable in Russia while registration is active but Western supply chains (Cosmic Nootropic, etc.) are degrading.

- THYMALIN ≠ THYMULIN — these are two completely different molecules and must not be conflated. Thymalin = Soviet (Khavinson / Samson-Med) calf-thymus polypeptide fraction; the Russian studies on Thymalin are about this fraction. Thymulin = a French-isolated zinc-binding nonapeptide (Glu-Ala-Lys-Ser-Gln-Gly-Gly-Ser-Asn, with Zn²⁺) characterized by J.-F. Bach in 1977; it is a thymic hormone candidate but a structurally and pharmacologically different molecule from Thymalin. Khavinson's peptide bioregulator corpus is **Thymalin only** — any claim of 'thymulin from a Khavinson paper' is conflating different molecules.
